Smoke and Mirrors Sound System "Undercover Planet" LP

Familiar songs. Unfamiliar territory.

What happens when the soundtrack of one generation gets dropped into another musical dimension? On Undercover Planet, Smoke and Mirrors Sound System takes ten songs spanning decades of pop, new wave and soul and sends them somewhere unexpected. Stevie Wonder, The Cars, Cyndi Lauper, XTC, Thomas Dolby, Elvis Costello, World Party, Matthew Sweet and more get reimagined through a richly layered world of reggae, ska and dub.

These aren't straightforward covers or nostalgia trips. They're musical relocations, where familiar melodies find new rhythms, unexpected arrangements and plenty of room to breathe. The result is simultaneously recognizable and surprising, with deep grooves, soulful vocals, adventurous horn arrangements and dub production that rewards repeated listening.

Led by John Roy and featuring an all-star cast of musicians connected to Fishbone, The Aggrolites, The Bandulus, Mobtown, Easy Star All-Stars, The Scofflaws, David Hillyard & The Rocksteady Seven and more, Undercover Planet brings together an extraordinary collection of players who know exactly how to make a groove move. Brian "Dub Robot" Wallace adds another dimension to the journey, while guest vocalists Chris Dowd, Zoe Devlin Love, Jeremy Peña, Tony Devenish, Ali Culotta and Silky Hookings put their own stamp on these reimagined classics.

Ten songs you know. A whole new world to hear them in.
